about candace, about her art

Picasso once said that "art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." Two of my greatest passions in life have always been to create art and a love of water. Because I grew up in south Louisiana and on the gulf coast amidst a close network of family and friends, my subject matter does tend to reflect the 'dust' and inspiration of my everyday life. Sunsets on the enchanting waters of the gulf; sunrises at the beautiful, snow white beaches of Destin, Florida; powerful storms, silent breaks, peaceful passings and swimming in the sea; all the fantastic seafood infused in our famous Louisiana cooking; fishing and hunting with my dad; learning the art of cooking from my mom; the exciting moments of catching bluepoint crabs in the honey hole with my brother; crawfish and crab boils and tiger bait; the haunting corners of New Orleans; loving the wind on my face on a boat; Christian images burned in my memory from Catholic schooling and upbringing; red and orange falls at the farm; the beautiful flowers and and landscapes that are cultivated by our southern heat and humidity; trials, tribulations and the crosses we bear; lots of texture and explosions of color. Wherever the dust comes from, my favorite part of being an artist is that it helps me to express, heal and add just a little of what I believe is beautiful to this world. And to wash away from my own soul the dust of everyday life.

Born and raised in Lafayette, Louisiana, I have been an artist since a very young age and was heavily influenced by the many aspects of the Acadian landscape and culture and the proximity of Lafayette to the Gulf coast. I want to thank each one of my family members and closest friends for helping me cultivate this artistic gift and supporting me all along the way. Their continued love and support has challenged me to grow as an artist. Originally trained in oils, I have worked in several mediums including pastels, acrylics, photography and watercolor. My current medium of choice is acrylics on wood and canvas. I am currently working on a commission basis and various series for upcoming shows. In addition to studio art, my interests include art history, decorative and outdoor art and interior design.
